My annual visit to Bangladesh saw me spend more time in the capital, Dhaka, than normal. I was able to spend time with our Zakir, our School Director, and his lovely family before meeting with both the Canadian and British High Commissioners. Both were eager to learn more about our school and its recent achievements. We have several follow up actions with each to see how we might be able to build the school’s profile and do some fundraising. We invited both HCs to come see the school for themselves, so we hope to welcome them soon.

Arriving in Bhola off  the overnight launch, Zakir and I were met with the usual warm welcome from all the children – so much joy that would spread throughout my visit. It was a week of lots of games of tag, cricket in the afternoons, and I was really impressed with the ship-shape order and tidiness across the boundary.

The staff has done a wonderful job developing the curricula across the various age groups, and the new room for our children with special educational needs is now so colourful and stimulating.

Each time I visit, I am amazed at the skills and artistry on display. The girls are making sanitary napkins and handicrafts at an impressive rate. The boys are creating some wonderful artefacts in the woodworking and metalworking shops. It is truly inspiring.

Our board meeting was also productive,  focusing on our on-going financial challenges for the school. We brainstormed ideas for increased fundraising, both in Bangladesh and abroad. It was encouraging to see everyone thinking creatively to help us navigate our current budget issues. We will get there if we all pull together.

Overall, a joyful and productive visit to our school. It is always sad to leave Bhola’s Childre at the end of the week, but I bring with me some amazing memories. I cannot wait to be back again next year.
